About us

The ensemble Bremer Geigenconsort was founded by David Budai in 2020 during the lockdown of the Corona crisis. As bad as the social and professional restrictions of the Corona pandemic are for freelance musicians, they also created a lot of space for the four musicians of the Geigenconsort to dedicate themselves to this special project. The aim of the ensemble is the scientific-artistic reconstruction of a violin ensemble, with consort instruments explicitly built for this purpose.

David Budai has been researching the development of violin ensembles during the 16th and 17th centuries for many years and in 2013 commissioned the first of these consort violin instruments modeled on 17th century Alemannic violins. Five of seven planned instruments are already available. The instruments require certain playing techniques, posture variants, bowing techniques and articulation possibilities, as well as theoretical knowledge of hexachord solmisation, notation issues, text meanings, transposition and scoring variants. To explore these and to elicit the unique sound from the instruments, the musicians devoted a lot of time and pleasure during the lockdown. It is a special experience to be able to play instruments that were built for the purpose of playing together and are therefore perfectly tuned to each other. This is a great foundation and inspiration for the musicians, whose aim is to make this unique sound a special listening experience for the audience.
